Doctor Snaggers (M.D?) is rather loosely based on Le Médecin Malgré Lui, A satirical comedy written by French playwright and vagabond/actor Molière. Molière comes from the seventeenth century and the court of the sun king (when he was in town), but things haven’t changed so much. The play launches a light-hearted attack on the pretensions and motives of some of the medical profession – and we would like to stress that Doctor Edelsten is certainly not, as has been rumoured, the model for our main character!
Molière sees a man, as a man with all his baser drives intact, Hippocratic oath notwithstanding, and some visits to the doctor can make us feel the same way! Sometimes, however, it takes medicine to clear the path of truelove and to let it run smooth. Happy endings are essential in comedies, and we provide one. We only hope respected Doctors will laugh along with the rest and find no malice here.
This show was performed in October 1985 at Benalla Town Hall.
